General Questions

  • We provide a full range of funeral services including cremations, burials, memorial ceremonies, repatriations, viewings, chapel services, and assistance with legal documentation.

  • A funeral typically takes place with the body present, while a memorial service is held without the body, often after cremation or burial.

  • A formal service is not mandatory. Many families opt for a private farewell or choose to hold a memorial at a later time.

  • Yes, a private viewing can be arranged before the cremation takes place. However, in certain circumstances — depending on the nature of the death or the condition of the person — our mortician may advise against it. We will always guide you with honesty and compassion, and help you find the most respectful way to say goodbye.

  • Absolutely. We work closely with families to honour and respect a wide range of religious and cultural traditions.

Cremation & Burial Information

  • Cremation is carried out at a licensed crematorium after all necessary legal documentation has been completed. The deceased is placed in a suitable coffin and respectfully transferred into the cremation chamber. The process is conducted with great care and in accordance with strict regulatory and ethical standards.

    In Victoria, there are nine crematoria: Springvale, Fawkner, Altona, Lilydale, Bunurong, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, and Gippsland. We will liaise with the appropriate crematorium based on location, availability, and your family’s wishes.

    Once the cremation is complete, the ashes are carefully collected and returned to the family in an urn of their choosing. We offer a selection of urns and keepsakes, and can also assist with interment or scattering arrangements if desired.

  • Yes. Many families choose to keep the ashes at home or have them transformed into memorial keepsakes.

  • Ashes can be scattered on private land (with permission) or in designated public areas. We can advise on local regulations

  • Yes, by law, a coffin is required for all cremations (with the exception of shroud bearers). Crematoriums also require a sturdy base to allow the coffin to move safely on rollers into the cremation chamber. We offer a range of affordable, simple, and decorative coffin options to suit different preferences and budgets.

  • Yes, in many cases burial plots can be purchased in advance. However, some cemeteries only offer plots on an “at-need” basis, meaning they are only available after a death has occurred. We’re happy to offer guidance, but we usually recommend contacting the cemetery directly for the most up-to-date availability and pricing. We can also assist you with that process if needed.

  • Yes. Preplanning allows you to record your wishes in detail and make important decisions ahead of time. This not only ensures your preferences are honoured but also eases the emotional and financial burden on your loved ones during an already difficult time. Our team can guide you through every step of the process with care and clarity.

  • No — Amity is no longer set up for prepaid funeral plans.
    However, if you or a loved one already have an existing Amity prepaid funeral, we will absolutely honour it in full.

    If you wish to arrange a new prepaid funeral, please visit Lonergan & Raven Funerals, our parent company, who are fully accredited to organise prepaid funerals.

  • Funeral costs can vary depending on the type of service, location, coffin selection, and any additional options you choose. We offer clear, transparent pricing with packaged options to suit a range of needs and budgets — from simple cremations to full traditional services.   • Absolutely. Every life is unique, and we believe every farewell should be too. We’re happy to tailor funeral services to reflect your personal, cultural, spiritual, or religious values. From venue selection and music to readings, floral arrangements, and ceremonial elements — we’ll work closely with you to create a meaningful and respectful tribute.

  • Our packages include all essential services required for a respectful and dignified funeral. However, certain third-party costs — such as cemetery fees, live-streaming or recording services, printed materials, or optional upgrades — may incur additional charges. We provide a clear breakdown of all costs upfront and are committed to transparency at every stage.
